Maria de Buenos Aires | 25-09/2018 - 21.00 - Odeon of Herodes Atticus

María de Buenos Aires Tango Opera in two parts Odeon of Herodes Atticus - 25 September 2018 The tango opera Maria de Buenos Aires, world-famous for Astor Piazzolla’s fascinating music, will be presented at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus for a single performance, to be held on September 25th under a full moon! This marks the first time that the famous opera is conceived as a tango choreography, directed by the renowned Natalia Hills. 14 dancers, 10 musicians, 10 actors join the remarkable Amelita Baltar, Piazzolla’s muse who performs one of the most beautiful arias ever written for tango opera. The opera premiered 50 years ago in Buenos Aires and has since been staged at some of the most prestigious opera houses and festivals in the world: Houston Grand Opera (1991), Covent Garden Festival at the Peacock Theatre (2000), Grand Thermae Villa (2003), Teatro Nacional de São João (2006), Edinburgh Festival (2010), Milwaukee Opera (2011), Cincinnati Opera (2012), Florida Grand Opera (2013), Syracuse Opera (2014), Anchorage Opera (2016), Opera Grand Rapids (2016), Atlanta Opera (2017), Mill City Summer Opera (2017). The title heroine, Maria, is born in the poor suburbs of Buenos Aires. She ends up a prostitute at the heart of the city and eventually falls in love with tango. Maria’s life and death is the thread keeping the opera together. The heroine’s story and the story of tango itself unfold inside the seedy underbelly of Argentina.
